My Ballot

My ballot in the Expert Witnesses improve on Pitchfork's poll is below. The full results of the poll can be found here. My ballot divides the 200 points evenly among the 20 albums, each album getting 10 points:

Dramarama - Hi-Fi Sci-Fi
Archers of Loaf - Icky Mettle
Luna - Penthouse
Fugees - The Score
Belle and Sebastian - If You're Feeling Sinister
Billy Bragg & Wilco - Mermaid Avenue
The Coup - Steal This Album
The Magnetic Fields - 69 Love Songs
Moby - Play
Hammell on Trial - Ed's Not Dead -- Hammell Comes Alive
Bob Dylan - "Love and Theft"
Orchestra Baobab - Specialist in All Styles
Buck 65 - Talkin' Honky Blues
Fountains of Wayne - Welcome Interstate Managers
Four Tet - Rounds
Kanye West - The College Dropout
Kanye West - Late Registration
Wussy - Funeral Dress
The Go! Team - Thunder, Lightning, Strike
Drive-By Truckers - Brighter Than Creation's Dark

Apologies to these fine artists who should have been on the ballot, but there were only 20 albums: Pavement (Brighten the Corners was the 21st on the list), OutKast, Sleater-Kinney, Sonic Youth, Yo La Tengo, Old 97s, PJ Harvey, Tricky, Youssou N'Dour, Todd Snider, Imperial Teen.

Notes: Did I mention that Dramarama is my platonic ideal of a rock band? The Archers of Loaf got a boast from last year's re-issue. The Fugees album was one I relistened to - it stands up. I may overrate that Belle & Sebastian album, bThe Go!ut the heart wants what the heart wants. I didn't need this year's soak the collector reissue of Mermaid Avenue to remind me why I loved the first album, but the leftover songs on the third disc aren't bad at all. Nothing either Billy Bragg or Wilco have ever done come close to those sessions. I discovered Boots Riley on Steal This Album, so he'll always be freshest there. Don't hold Moby's marketing against him. Hammell on Trial's live album is my favorite live album of the last twenty years, although Todd Snider's may join it at some point. You don't know who Orchestra Baobab are? There is no better or easier to find introduction. Buck 65's isn't just Cancon n the list - it's both ambitious and fun. I like songs - Magnetic Fields, Fountains of Wayne, Drive-By Truckers. That Four Tet is the best album to work to. Kanye West stands like aa colussus among us, or he did before he became full of himself. I won't go on about Wussy. The Go! Team is my own little secret - get the British version of the album - 3 songs shorter so the momentum never stops.

Chris here: Now that they've rewritten the last paragraph into something approaching English, I understand what they're trying to say: "We've met all the criteria for not being spam". Except it's all a lie. They didn't find me through their own efforts. If they did, they would know I'm associated with a university library's web site, and consequently not selling anything tangible. I'm not a businessman, but they don't know that because they bought my email address on a list. Secondly, I've followed their instructions for unsubscribing, but in two days I will get a follow-up email asking why I haven't responded. God help anyone who gives these people money.

I'm Tired of Getting These Announcements...

Pitchfork and 33 1/3

I haven't felt like writing about music. I don't have many discoveries to report that haven't been covered by Robert Christgau at his Expert Witness blog/site/whatever. We haven't been doing music polls for at least four months, although there is one now in reaction to the Pitchfork poll. So, I've been content to make fun of clueless spam in this space.

Except, I didn't vote but I have been reading.

The good folks at Pitchfork decided to hold a poll. The poll let the site's readers vote for any album of the last 15 years, but Pitchfork made it much easier to vote for certain albums, albums with a Pitchfork sensibility. So, it's hardly a surprise that these albums did much better in the poll. If this was a social science experiment, you'd have to reject the data as biased. But, really, it's just a slapdash poll to get the music blogosphere talking. Mission accomplished.

Of the top 100 albums in the Pitchfork poll, I've heard 84 of them. I don't like all 84 - about half of those I find either boring or just too art rock for my taste. In general, the Pitchfork list leans very heavily on the resurgent art rock strain in alternative music. Why do Pitchfork readers like Neutral Milk Hotel more than Sonic Youth? Alas, I suspect that means the Neutral Milk Hotel album that finished 4th (?!?) is in my future listening.

Our library has acquired the entire 33 and 1/3 series (up to early this year) published by Continuum books. Each book discusses a single album. The book are short enough to be read in a single afternoon, and that's been a good length for me this summer. The quality of the writing varies, and a lot of the albums covered strike me as unworthy of being included in the series (there's a book on that Neutral Milk Hotel album). I just wonder if there's a readership for these books beyond someone like me. The books aren't rigorous enough for scholarship and not breezy enough for the casual reader.
